I had a monitor and a keyboard lying around in the basement for a couple of years now, so I decided to put them to use and bought the HP dc5000 refurbished in early January, and after three months of use it's still performing wonderfully. For those looking to install Windows XP, you're in luck since it comes with a burned copy of the driver cd and a coa. However, my intent was to install Ubuntu onto it, and my pc experience has been great. Mind you, Ubuntu is a heavyweight operating system, though not as demanding as Vista, and the dc5000 performs like a champ (and the Ubuntu live cd thankfully has all drivers necessary for the dc5000). Startup is under a minute, accessing files, folders, and programs is almost instantaneous, and watching videos on Youtube is usually stutter free.
The 512MB of RAM does limit how many things you can have going on at once though. However, I've been able to let videos buffer on Youtube, rip a dvd, transcode a video file, and browse Dell's flash-happy site all at once and only then did performance take a major hit (any action I took had up to a 10 second delay).
The integrated video card is also lacking--fullscreen dvd playback is blurry when deinterlace is activated and there are nasty jaggies when deinterlace is disabled. Also, 3D games graphically more intense than Runescape look TERRIBLE--refresh rate/framerate stink and pop-ups are common. However, I'm neither a videophile nor a pc gamer, so I've never found the need to upgrade the dc5000. If you do want to upgrade, keep in mind that this pc only has PCI slots, no AGP or PCIE.
Anyway, this little HP (not so little by today's standard) covers all the basics and performs them nicely. The only things it could really use are a dvd drive and memory card reader/writer (the lack of a floppy drive is also worth mentioning), but with usb expansion it's not a big problem. As long as you aren't expecting miracles, the HP dc5000 will serve you well.
