We purchased our first Velocity Micro computer - the Gx455 Desktop PC - Silver. To our dismay the video output of the ATI Radeon(tm) HD 5850 video card was variously severely corrupted or nonexistent. As I was repackaging the unit for return I heard a loose part rattling inside the case. I spotted a loose component retaining screw thru the glass side panel as I manipulated the case. The screw was eventually positioned over a hole in the case bottom and fell out. Perhaps the screw caused a short? We contacted Velocity Micro Support, obtained a case number, an e-mail verification, then found them to be not very helpful. VM requires that they have a copy of the purchase receipt in their possession before they render full support. We were told that we must send a copy via e-mail, FAX, or snail mail. Because they were unwilling to render anything but basic assistance, we returned the computer and exchanged it for a new one.
Again, no video output out of the box. We placed the case on its side so that the motherboard was horizontal and the ATI Radeon(tm) HD 5850 video card perpendicular to the motherboard. We removed the ATI Radeon(tm) HD 5850 video card, cleaned all electrical contacts, reinstalled the board, fired up the computer (still positioned on its side), and it worked for several hours. Then I made a huge mistake. I positioned the case vertically in the designed operating position so that I could use the DVD recorder/player. In several minutes the video began to deteriorate. By gently pressing on the video card I was able to variously correct or terminate the video output. The case was placed back on its side; the video card was gently manipulated until the proper video output was regained.
Our assessment is: the design and rigidity of the video card mechanical mounting is severely flawed.
Velocity Micro Support was informed of our findings via e-mail referencing the assigned case number. We asked how they wished to proceed. Velocity Micro Support has not replied.
The basic design looks great! The structural implementation of the design is flawed. The video card to motherboard connection should not be this fragile!
This is our first experience with Velocity Micro computers. Should we try a third time? If Velocity Micro had responded and provided a repair solution, it is likely we would have given them an opportunity to prove themselves.
So far, not so good!
