A iBuyPower machine with a power graphics card, decent CPU, etc. The problem was it was to much to leave running for our upstairs entertainment. The 450W powersupply sucked energy like a vampire and our 1 year old saw the huge red glowing thing as a magnet to play on.
Enter a search for something small for the upstairs TV. Enter the Shuttle XS35GT.
So far this computer pretty acts as expected. I am running Windows 7 on it (I'm not hard core enough to go Unbuntu, though that would of been faster). It currently performs most tasks without hickup, though I try to keep its work to a minimum (focus the limited resources).
Netflix - displays to a 42inch 1080p just fine, though the system chokes at NetflixHD (so I'm runing sans HD)
HD Movies - I have a TivoHD and I transfer shows to the shuttle. It plays the HD video flawlessly.
Daily Show - no real problems watching the daily show on the screen. Some stuttering, but less as I close stuff
Skype/Google TV - seems to work just fine
Pandora - runs just fineTo recount some of the benefits to this PC
1 - no fan 40w power supply
2 - 500 gig hard drive, 2gig Ram
3 - built in wireless and lots of USB ports
4 - it is smaller than my external hard drive (almost)Cons
1 - you will need to pick up an OS. Windows 7 is another 130 or so bucks at least (unless you know a student)
2 - it isn't a powerhouse. Try to run to much at once you will choke it
3 - i think I probably shouldn't be running Tivo desktop and doing video if I wanted real speed
