HP Pavilion E9230F-E Desktop Pc Review

HP Pavilion E9230F-E Desktop Pc

This computer came highly recommended by everyone I spoke with. Plus my husband, who is a techie and builds his own computers, really liked the specs on this model. The only problem was that everywhere I checked, they had sold out of it, even though it's a brand new model! I ended up buying the floor model at my local computer store rather than wait.
Now that I've been using this HP Pavilion Elite e9230f for two weeks, I can see why this model flies out the door. It's lightening fast, came loaded with Windows 7 Home Premium, is incredibly easy to set up and very user friendly. It has everything I need and more... and all in a very handy upfront design that's flexible and expandable. I love it!

HP Pavilion Slimline S3700F Desktop PC Review

HP Pavilion Slimline S3700F Desktop PC
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
NOTE: Amazon had recently consolidated the reviews for both the S3720 and the S3700's into one page. This review refers to the HP Pavilion Slimline S3720F Desktop PC (2.5 GHz Intel Pentium Dual-Core Desktop E5200 Processor, 4 GB RAM, 500 GB Hard Drive, DVD Drive,Vista Premium).
The HP Slimline S3720F is an excellent slim form-factor pc with a few limitations. I needed another small sized PC at my engineering lab, so I purchased the S3720F. Typically I build my own machines, so I was quite impressed when I purchased this model, assuming one understands its limitations.
The HP Slimline S3720F runs Intel's Dual Core E5200 processor (mid-range processor line). Note that this is not Intel's "Core 2 Duo" line (the high-range which has a faster front-side bus). Regardless in conjunction with a healthy 4 gb of RAM, there is enough horsepower to run most of my engineering applications, which can be quite intensive. The 500 GB harddrive is adequate, though I see myself needing more storage space in the future (easily remedied with an external HDD).
The S3720F runs Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack1. Contrary to the negative sentiment against Windows Vista, I have to clarify that Windows Vista SP1 is very functional. I use numerous operating systems including, various Linux packages, OS X (Mac), Windows XP, even Windows 7 Beta. So after uninstalling some "bloat-ware" and removing some unneeded startup programs (msconfig), the S3720F runs Vista like a dream. Some slowdown occurs when one uses some Aero features (graphic-intensive features). But aside from that, it is surprisingly smooth. I can load firefox pages in seconds, run Matlab, Itunes, and an array of other programs simultaneously with no noticeable slowdown.
A very important exception to note is that this computer comes with a 64-bit Windows OS. This may cause some incompatibility issues with some 32-bit software. This is arguably of no fault of the OS in its own, but rather that the software was not designed to run on a 64-bit OS. Aside from these issues, once you optimize the system, the performance is much better than one would expect.
The physical design of the system borrows from the concept of minimalism. In the front, there are two USB ports, a covered CD/DVD tray, a HP pocket media drive bay, and the many different memory cards ports. The backside houses the standard ports, with no exceptional features. Note that the video-out to the monitor is VGA and NOT DVI or HDMI. Overall there is some great aesthetic appeal, and one would not be embarrassed to stash this PC in an entertainment center. Be sure to place it in an area that is well ventilated (as with most to all PCs).
Overall, I am very pleased with the overall package for the price. Whether you use it for common office tasks, light engineering work, or a living-room media center (though only one VGA-out is limiting), the HP Slimline performs its tasks admirably.
Product Positives:
+Compact form-factor
+Less bloat-ware than comparable computers
+Windows Vista SP 1 64bit (needed to take advantage of the 4gb+ of ram)
+Great performance after some tweaking
+Wireless B/G Network Card built-in
+Quiet operation
Product Negatives:
-Limited room for upgrades
-VGA out only (no DVI, HDMI)
-Some 32-bit software may not work on a 64-bit OS
-Built-in video card is a bit on the weak side, poor performance in graphic-intensive programs (Solid-graphic modeling, games)
-Midrange CPU E5200 slower than Intel's Highline of Core 2 Duo's
-I don't like the "tactile feel" of the included keyboard
Updates and Other Thoughts:
-I thought I'd post the "Experience Rating" from Windows Vista, which is built-in Vista tool that rates your hardware against some performance metrics. The scale ranges from 1.0 (poor performance) to 5.9 (excellent performance). This tool can be found by right-clicking on "My computer" and scroll to properties. For the HP Slimline S3720F here are the results:
Processor: --------- 5.4
Memory (ram): ------ 4.6
Graphics: ---------- 3.7
Gaming Graphics: --- 3.0
Primary Hard Disk: - 5.9
Overall Score of: -- 3.0
The overall score is 3/6 which would suggest an average score. However, the "Overall Score" is based on the lowest subscore, which is the Gaming Graphics. Otherwise, this machine scored exceptionally well in the processor, memory, and harddisk subtests. So in conclusion, unless you plan on using this machine for heavy gaming, or artwork/graphic applications, the S3720F is an exceptional value computer.

The HP Pavilion s3720f Slimline desktop PC gives you all the power of a fully loaded home/office desktop in a sleek, silver-and-black chassis that's one-third the size of a traditional PC tower, enabling you to place it unobtrusively anywhere--from your office to entertainment center to kitchen. You can easily burn your home video productions to DVD for friends and family with the dual-layer, multi-format LightScribe DVD/CD burner, which enables you to store up to 8.5 GB of data on a DL disc.
This desktop is powered by the 2.6 GHz AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ dual-core processor, which increases the efficiency and speed of the PC while running multiple programs and the latest multi-threaded software. It features a large 320 GB hard drive, and it includes an open drive bay for an optional HP Pocket Media Drive (which can add up to 160 GB of storage). Other features include 3 GB of installed RAM (4 GB maximum), Nvidia GeForce 6150 SE graphics with 128 MB of dedicated memory (and up to 1343 MB of available memory), multi-format memory card reader, a wide variety of connectivity options (including both USB 2.0 and Firewire), and digital audio output for home theater surround sound.

Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium (32-bit, Service Pack 1) includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center. In addition to easily playing your DVD movies and managing your digital audio library, you'll be able to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV). Vista also integrates new search tools throughout the operating system, includes new parental control features, and offers new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures.

The Basics

Processor: AMD's Athlon 64 X2 5000+ dual-core processor is built for tomorrow's 64-bit applications, which will require a processor with significant power. Dual-core technology is like having two processors working together, each one taking care of different applications, so power-users actually experience greater performance when multiple applications are running. Digital media enthusiasts will appreciate the enhancements while simultaneously working in high-definition video and photo editing and audio mixing programs. It includes such AMD features as HyperTransport Technology (which increases the communication between integrated circuits) and Enhanced Virus Protection.
This 2.6 GHz processor offers a system bus with speeds up to a blazing 2000 MHz and each core offers a 512 KB L2 cache--for a 1 MB total. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

Hard Drive: The 320 GB Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive (7200 RPM) offers a wealth of storage space, perfect for storing a vast multimedia collection or for editing digital video. This SATA hard drive has a 3Gb/s interface speed that enables up to 300MB/s data transfer rates (double the speed of the current SATA interface of 1.5Gb/s).
This Slimline PC also includes a drive bay that fits an optional HP Pocket Media Drive, which enables you to add up to 160 GB of additional storage. The Pocket Media Drive also works with any USB-enabled PC, for easy transferring of multimedia files from other computers in your home.

Memory: The 3 GB of installed RAM (PC6400, 1 x 2 GB, 2 x 1 GB) helps boost the amount of available video RAM that's shared with this desktop's video card. It also offers a fast 800 MHz speed. This notebook has a 4 GB maximum RAM capacity (2 x 2 GB). To receive the faster data transfer benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.

DVD/CD Drive: This multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with writing both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It features 12x DVD±R DL Write Once, 16x DVD±R, 8x DVD+RW, 6x DVD-RW, 12x DVD-RAM, 40x CD-R, 32x CD-RW write speeds and 40x CD-ROM, and 16x DVD-ROM read speeds.
This LightScribe DVD±RW drive lets you laser-etch silkscreen quality text and images on to CDs and DVDs . Your software, PC and discs work together for a no-hassle way to burn just the labels you want. After you burn content, just flip the disc over, reinsert and burn your label--anything from a simple title to a full-disc work of art.

Keyboard & Mouse: It comes with an HP multimedia keyboard and scroller mouse (both with PS/2 connections).
Video & Audio This desktop features an integrated Nvidia GeForce 6150 SE graphics/video card with 128 MB of dedicated graphics memory. Windows Vista can also allocate up to 1343 MB of total graphics memory from the system memory. It features NVidia's PureVideo technology--which provides great picture clarity, smooth video, accurate color, and precise image scaling for video content--and full support for Microsoft DirectX 9.0 for stunningly realistic cinematic effects for all DirectX-compatible applications. It also offers an integrated audio card that can produce high definition surround sound configurable to 8 speakers.
Networking, Connectivity & Expansion For expansion, this Slimline desktop has one PCI x1 Express slot (occupied), one PCI x16 Express slot (occupied), one 5.25-inch external bay (occupied), and one 3.5-inch bay (occupied). It comes with the following external connections:

6 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players (2 front, 4 back)
1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
15-in-1 multi-format memory card reader, compatible with CompactFlash I/II, IBM Microdrive, Secure Digital (SD), miniSD, MultiMediaCard (MMC), Reduced Size MultiMediaCard (RS-MMC), MultiMediaCard Plus (MMC plus), MultiMediaCard Mobile (MMC mobile), Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, Memory Stick Duo, Memory Stick Pro Duo, SmartMedia, and xD Picture Card
2 PS/2 ports for connecting keyboards and mice
1 VGA monitor port
1 line-in, 1 line-out, 1 microphone, and 1 digital audio output

eMachines EL1352-43 Desktop (Black) Review

eMachines EL1352-43 Desktop (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Emachines EL1352-43 took only 10 minutes to get from the initial power up to post setup Windows 7 initialization. However, it took about 75 minutes to burn the 3 Windows 7 System Recovery discs and 1 Driver/Application DVD discs. There is no wireless card built in so after installing and setting up my wireless network adapter into one of the 9 USB 2.0 ports the next task was to update windows with 39 updates including the new Windows 7 SP1.
Although the windows update download times will vary depending on network connectivity and MS server traffic, the installation of the updates, especially the installation time for new Windows 7 Service Pack 1 seemed slightly faster on this 2GB DDR3 Single Core AMD Sempron 150 at 2.9 GHz then it was on my 3GB DDR3 Dual Core Intel T4400 2.2 GHz powered Windows 7 laptop just 2 days earlier. Both systems run Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.
The system runs very quietly. The 500GB 7200RPM Disk Drive and the two fans, a power supply and CPU cooler seemed very quiet and only a slight fan sound could be detected less than about 24 inches (.6 m) from the top, side and rear vents
The 16x DVD drive was also quiet and playback was smooth using the integrated NVIDIA GeForce 6150SEnForce 430 Video Adapter with no lag or artifacts using a 1280 x1024 monitor with 32 bit true color. Unfortunately, there is no HDMI port and only VGA video output.
Keep in mind with the mini case size and the 220 watt PS there is very limited internal expansion. The only add in card slots are 1 PCI Express x16 slot and 1PCI Express x1 slot.
Even before the bloat ware removal power up boot time was only about 45 seconds and power down time about 13 seconds.
Pros:
Small size, Quiet, Value for speed, 9 USB ports, 1 Gigabit Ethernet port, 2.9 GHz Sempron.
Cons:
No HDMI, Single Core, Limited expansion capability, No built in wireless network adapter, User needs to burn 4 System Recovery/Driver DVD discs.

Compaq Presario CQ5500F Desktop PC - Black Review

Compaq Presario CQ5500F Desktop PC - Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Well I just received this computer about two days ago, but despite this, I think I can make a pretty good assessment about its pros and cons thus far. I'll begin by saying that from an aesthetic viewpoint, this computer looks very nice. The case itself is matte, but the front bezel itself is a nice, glossy finish that really does look nice, all things considered. It has two USB 2.0 ports on the front as well as jacks for both headphones and a microphone, so no need to reach around to the back of the unit if you don't feel like it. Oh yes, just so you're not as confused as I was at first, the power button is technically located on what would be your right hand side if the computer's front is facing you, situated near the top of the case. The button is illuminated by a somewhat irritating bright blue LED, a lighting choice that seems to have become popular in the computer market these days, so it's kind of a take it or leave it thing depending on how you feel about such. The only ridiculous part of the external design is, in my opinion, the terribly designed bay for the DVD reader. A plastic flap obscures the drive itself, and to open it, one presses a silver button directly underneath this flap. Now this is all fine and dandy until you try to use it: would a nuclear power plant have a computer monitoring the reactor that is rendered inoperable after turning it on? The same issue takes place here--the plastic flap actually flips over the button itself after opening, making it a totally unnecessary fiasco to press the button again to let the drive read a placed disc. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that after a few uses the flap becomes a little stiff; it will show some difficulty closing after the drive door recedes. This is not anything severe, but you will probably have to push it closed manually. There's one more big issue that came up, actually: NO CASE FAN. I'm surprised this evaded my notice for so long. This computer should run pretty cool, and a case fan can run anywhere from $5-20, but the fact that they didn't include this is actually really underhanded if this is HP's idea of "cutting costs." Still, it hasn't blown up on me yet, and a fan is shipping in the mail. 1/2 point off.
The hardware itself is decent; nothing mindblowing in this box to be sure. Two gigs' worth of DDR3 memory should give this computer some decent punch, but why not upgrade to four and max out its potential?***NOTE*** Apparently Amazon was wrong about the memory type. Another reviewer found it to be DDR2 memory instead of DDR3, so plan accordingly before purchasing!***NOTE*** The PSU is 250 watts, I believe. This should be enough to power everything on board adequately, but in case you were intending to add a second hard drive or add a graphics card, upgrading the power supply may be wise. In any case, it only comes with two power couplings for SATA-type devices, both of which are already in use by the hard drive and DVD drive. It does have some older MOLEX-type adaptors, however, and the motherboard hosts one IDE slot. I do have to mention that the power supply is kind of a pain in the rear to remove, though. The box also hosts one PCI slot, two PCI-e and one PCI-e16, I think. I'll verify this later. Graphics are integrated--not what you would want for gaming, but I find they're adequate enough to play PoxNora online with minimal hiccups, so it can carry you through in many cases. Processor is an AMD Sempron, which is a lower level unit, although it's definitely strong enough to run Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit without any issue. I'm having the hardest time finding out what's the biggest processor the motherboard will take, however; even the HP website and several manuals I've read thus far seem not to be willing to divulge this useful bit of knowledge. Overall, though, I think I can recommend this one as a purchase, especially for this ridiculously low price.
***EDIT*** They (Amazon) just lowered this PC's price to under $300 for a few days. It has since went back up to the default price, sadly. I'm not sure if that means I bought a lemon, but this is a definite must buy if you need decent computing power and the latest Windows OS at a price so low it could be called criminal. Just remember that Windows7 Home Premium does have some compatibility problems with older programs...to remedy this, you will need to change to either Professional or Ultimate.

HP Pavilion a350n Desktop PC (2.80-GHz Pentium 4 (Hyper-Threading), 512 MB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, DVD+RW/CD-RW Combo Drive) Review

HP Pavilion a350n Desktop PC (2.80-GHz Pentium 4 (Hyper-Threading), 512 MB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, DVD+RW/CD-RW Combo Drive)

This computer is awesome! This computer is unbelievably fast. Because of Hyper Threading technology, XP thinks this computer has 2 processors. When you go to Windows Task Manager and look at the performance screen you see two processor boxes, very cool. It also has everything most people would need or want... 160GB, 7200rpm hard drive, DVD+R/RW drive that burns DVDs and CDs. It has a second CD-ROM drive to use for copying directly to the burner. It has a front panel 7 in 1 memory card reader, high speed video card with TV out, 2 firewire (1394) ports, 6 USB 2.0 ports, HP Image Zone, Director and Memories Disk creator software. It supports 5.1 audio. It also includes software to burn CDs and DVDs. Other than a better keyboard and mouse, there is not much you would need to add to this computer. Take a high grade look at the 350n, I don't think you will be disappointed.

As the most capable model in HP's wide-ranging a300n series of desktop computers, the Pavilion a350n Desktop PC is a fast and adaptable rig that's more than ready to handle most any home, home office, leisure and business application. Sporting solid 3-D graphics support, oodles of storage space and all the critical connectivity options, the Pavilion a350n is a wise invesent in the future.
Driven by a potent 2.8 GHz Pentium 4 processor with Hyper-Threading technology (Hyper-Threading allows a single CPU system to behave in some aspects like a dual-CPU system -- thereby boosting performance during key high-drain procedures such as multitasking) and 512 MB of PC2700 DDR SDRAM memory, the Pavilion a350n sports enough top-end speed for virtually any task. It's 3-D graphics accelerator, an nVidia GeForce4 MX 440 AGP 8X graphics card with 64 MB DDR video memory and TV-out, will allow you to run older and midlevel 3-D games and even send a video signal to your television, but won't efficiently run the current batch of extreme high-end 3-D games.
Compaq has equipped the system with a huge 160 GB hard disk to give you plenty of room for programs, files, and a full multimedia library. Other key amenities include a blazing 48-speed CD-ROM drive for playing audio discs and loading programs; a DVD+RW/CD-RW combo drive for burning audio and data discs, playing DVD movies and writing homegrown videos to DVD; and a 7-in-1 digital card reader for accessing memory cards from PDAs, digital cameras, and the like. HP has clearly built the Pavilion a350n to meet current and future expansion and connectivity needs. The unit features a half dozen high-speed USB 2.0 ports (one of the front) for exchanging information with external devices such as digital cameras and scanners, two FireWire ports (one on the front) for fast interaction with digital camcorders, a front-mounted microphone and headphone port, two available PCI slots, and a six-speaker surround sound audio controller.
Communication facilities include a 56K modem for low-speed dial-up surfing and a 10/100Base-T Ethernet interface for high-speed e-communications. An HP multimedia keyboard with hotkeys and a hassle-free optical mouse complete the hardware picture.
Bundled software includes Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Microsoft Works 7.0, Microsoft Money 2003, and a variety of multimedia and security utilities. A monitor and speakers are not enclosed, thus allowing you to select from the wide variety of choices available today.

I bought this computer to replace my old one. After installation, new computer turns out to be defective: it is much slower than my old one; it freezes and doesn't work properly. I called Amazon, they told me to call Circut City, because they fulfilled the order. Circut City had no record of my purchase. I called Amazon again and they promised to replace it within 5-7 days. After a week I called them again. It turns out computer is on back order and it will be delivered by end of the month (I'm still waiting), which they failed to communicate with me initially. I use this computer for work and it made my work very inefficient. This computer was a choice for me because it has 3 year warranty.
It has Windows XP installed. If you want Windows 7 - there is a disk with Windows 7, but you have to install it yourself.

I purchased this PC from this seller, assuming that his description of the PC was accurate. I bought into it because his feedback is always good. However, when I got this machine, it was only 512MB RAM and not 2GB like the description promised. I contacted seller and left him negative feedback, to which he responded to promptly ... He apologised profusely and offered to send me two 1GB each sticks of RAM, and if I removed my negative feedback right away, he'd throw in a 4GB flash drive for my troubles. I wouldn't have removed the FB if I knew that I couldn't replace it with another. The seller knew this, and that's why he had me do it. He sent me that flash drive to cover his behind.
Basically, this guy bribed me so he could get more sales and sell his fake PCs. Also, this seller dropped the price, [...] ... I wonder why that is ... Too many complaints ? Anyone who bought this PC and left good feedback obviously doesn't know how to check their systems and HDs to make sure they are accurate.
So, I removed the feedback and received the RAM and flash drive in the next business day.
Today, I tried to move files from my other PC (which is 176GB HD storage), and it stopped at 30GB to tell me there isn't enough space to do so. I checked it out, and what do you know, it was only 40GB !!! So, not only did this seller goof up on the RAM, he also lied about the HD space, as well as the processor. He says it's 2.8 and it's only 2.4 ... So far, this has been nothing but a nightmare.
I will NOT be removing this review this time, because I think this seller's potential victims/customers have the right to know what they are purchasing.
I will be more than happy to provide screen shots. As a matter of fact, here they are :

I wish I didn't have to leave a 1-5 star review for this product, because the seller doesn't even deserve one star.
